2.0 out of 5 stars Satires on self-obsessed NY "money"- bit trashy though, 29 Jan 2003

Candice Bushnell creates some insightful writing on the vain and sex obsessed New York elite. Unfortunately it suffers from absolutely none of the characters being likable and therefore they are only engaging on a superficial lets-see-them-fail level. There isn't any depth to the book at all- this is more a read on the beach novel to a serious social commentary.
Bushnell's obsession with sex can strangely make it seem boring at times. I thought her stories were good satire of soulless and spoilt thirty-something's until I realised that she has a good deal of empathy with their causes.
The move to London in the final story of the book was a mistake unless Bushnell really wants to prove how superficial she is. The whole "an attractive woman in New York is beautiful in London and a beautiful woman in London is only attractive in New York" attitude is insulting and very blind. She believes "beauty" only rests on whether you get your nails manicured and hair cut every two weeks! This end chapter spoilt the rest of the book for me. Bushnell's inaccurateness in dealing with English-ness made me wonder how much of an illusion the rest of the book was.
A light don't-take-seriously read. This is nothing more than candyfloss for the brain and a mild disappointment from the writer of Sex and the City.

2.0 out of 5 stars Superficial typical american book, 17 Aug 2003
I really wanted to read this book because it sounded like fun. The book turned out to be extremely superficial. In the whole book nothing particularly interesting happens, I kept hoping that at least one of the stories will end with something worth reading but I was disappointed each time. If all American women are like the characters in this book than a really pity America and the American men.
I think that anybody can write a book like this if it has 5 minutes to spare. My advise to everybody wanting to read this book - don't it is a real waste of time!!!!!!!!!!!!
